The 4th Young Researcher Conference on Nuclear Science and Technology
From 6 to 7 October 2016, at the Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology (INST), the 4th Young Researcher Conference on Nuclear Science and Technology was jointly organised by Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (VINATOM), the VINATOM Youth Union and the INST. The aim of the Conference was to make an overall summary and discussions about the young staff’s research activities in nuclear science and technology in the past two years and then work out research orientations in coming years.
The Conference drew the attention of managers and researchers in the field of atomic energy. The leaders representing VINATOM and the units of VINATOM and two representatives of Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) took part in the Conference, including Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Nhi Dien, Dr. Cao Dinh Thanh, Vice Presidents (VP) of the VINATOM; Dr. Trinh Van Giap, Director of the INST; Mr. Nguyen Van Thoan from Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality, MOST and Mr. Nguyen Hung Thanh from Department of Planning – General Affairs, MOST. Several leading experts and scientists in this field also attended the Conference, including Prof. Dao Tien Khoa, Prof. Tran Duc Thiep, Prof. Do Quy Son and Assoc. Prof. Do Ngoc Lien. In addition, the Conference attracted over 100 young researchers and staff from the units of VINATOM and from universities, hospitals, institutes and departments whose major work areas are related to nuclear science and technology.
In the opening speech, VP Nguyen Nhi Dien stressed the objective as well as the necessity of the Conference. He said that since 2010 the Young Researcher Conference on Nuclear Science and Technology has been held in order to foster research and development activities conducted by young staff in the field of nuclear science and technology. This has made a considerable contribution to the development of qualified nuclear human resource, to the nuclear power development purpose and to nuclear technique application into the Vietnam national economy and society development.
After the opening ceremony, the Conference was subdivided into two sections, including section A (Nuclear Power Technology and Relevant Fields) and section B (Radiation Technology and Nuclear Technique Applications and Relevant Fields). There were totally 46 oral reports and 23 posters presented at the two sections. The young researchers of the INST contributed 15 oral presentations, in which: Nuclear Physics Centre (4), Nuclear Energy Centre (6), Radiation Protection Centre (3), Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring & Impact Assessment Centre (1) and Nuclear Technique Application Centre (1). All of those fifteen reports were the latest research results of the staff’s projects conducted at the INST in the past two years.
In the summarisation right after the presentations, the leaders of the two sections stated that all of the presenters successfully performed at the Conference with well-prepared reports and good presentation skills. In addition, the section leaders added that many presenters contributed their reports on nuclear technique application and development in medicine, environment, agriculture, industry and other relevant fields.
At the end of the Conference, the prizes, including four Prize A, four Prize B and nine Prize C, were awarded to the presenters whose oral presentations and posters were highly evaluated. Amongst those prizes, the researchers of the INST won three Prize A, one Prize B and two Prize C for their high quality reports as follows:
Prize A:
- “Fuel loading pattern optimization of a VVER-1000 reactor using Simulated Annealing and Tabu search” by Tran Viet Phu, et al.
- “Neutron Calibration Field in the INST” by Le Ngoc Thiem, et al.
- “Study of medium effect by 12 C- 12 C elastic scattering analysis at low energies” by Le Hoang Chien, et al.
Dr. Cao Dinh Thanh awarded Prize A
Prize B:
- “Designing the core loading pattern of a VVER-1200/V491 reactor” by Tran Vinh Thanh, et al.
Dr. Trinh Van Giap awarded Prize B
Prize C:
- “Spectrum of 67Fe nuclei from the (p,np) reaction” by Bui Duy Linh, et al.
- “Development of an MCNP5-Origen2 coupling scheme for burnup calculation of VVER-1000 fuel assemblies” by Nguyen Huy Hiep, et al.
Dr. Nguyen Hao Quang awarded Prize C
Prior to the closing ceremony, Dr. Pham Ngoc Dong, Representative of the VINATOM Youth Union and of Vietnam young researchers in the field of atomic energy, expressed his thanks to the leaders of the VINATOM and of the INST for their great interest and kind support for the Conference. Also he said that thanks to gathering together in the Conference, young researchers had opportunities to exchange innovative ideas and to share their experience as well as pieces of useful information about research activities. Later, a representative of the presenters indicated real and considerable challenges in nuclear science and technology research areas in the future.
Addressing his remark at the ceremony, VP Cao Dinh Thanh really appreciated the young staff’s research achievements in the previous two years. In the end, he emphasised that the VINATOM leadership would always support and monitor the young researchers’ research activities as well as their growth progress in coming years.
