In the framework of the Cooperation Program for Human Resource Development for Nuclear Power between Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (VINATOM) and Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), the 7th VINATOM-JAEA Joint Training Course on Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring (ERM-7) has been held at Hanoi-NuTEC Center, Institute for Nuclear and Technology (INST).
The course was attended by twenty participants from institutions with relevant fields like several of hospitals, radiation monitoring and warning stations, provincial departments of science and technology, research institutes and universities.
Thirteen informative lectures, which included theoretical and practical sessions, were delivered by Vietnamese instructors and Japanese dispatched experts throughout the week of the course. The practical sessions were conducted on the basis of using available equipment supported by Japan partner.
The 21-25 August course, focusing on radiation safety and monitoring, is a part of follow-up training program carried out at the INST. The course provided the participants with both basic and specialized knowledge as well as experiences related to environmental radioactivity monitoring techniques, including:
(i) Collecting and sampling methods;
(ii) On-site radiation measurements;
(iii) Lab-based radioisotope analysis;
(iv) Activity calculation of radioisotopes and radiation dose rate calculations;
(v) Providing general information and technical issues associated with Vietnam national environmental radiation warning and monitoring network.
At the end of the course, all of the trainees received certificates of participation in the course. On behalf of the host organization, Deputy Director of the INST, Assoc. Prof. Pham Duc Khue made closing remarks and expressed his appreciation for the efforts of all experts, instructors as well as participants during the course. He was also full of hope that both useful information and practice skills gained from the lectures could help the participants enlarge their knowledge and make practical applications into research and management activities regarding environmental radioactivity monitoring in Vietnam.
