The 8th VINATOM-JAEA joint training course on environmental radiation monitoring (ERM-8)

Within the framework of the Cooperation Program for Nuclear Human Resource Development between Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (VINATOM) and Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), the 8^th VINATOM-JAEA Joint Training Course on Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring (ERM-8) was held in August 2018 at Hanoi-NuTEC Center, Institute for Nuclear and Technology (INST).

    Sixteen participants from science and technology departments, radiation monitoring stations, research institutes, universities and companies in relevant sectors/fields took part in the ERM-8.

       Annually conducted at the INST, the course is intended to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required for environmental radiation monitoring, both basic and specialized.

       During the week-long course, this year Vietnamese instructors delivered eight lectures and facilitated three exercises with the available equipment supported by Japan. Both of the theoretical and practical sessions covered four main items, including:

-       Collecting and sampling methods;

-       In situ radiation measurements and laboratory analysis;

-       Identification and calculations of radioactive isotope activity and dose rates;

-       Current status and technical issues related to the national radiation monitoring and early warning network.

       At the end of the course, the participants took an assessment test that allowed them to see where their knowledge was strong and which issues they need to review for more solid understanding. All participants had good evaluation results and received certificates of participation in the course.

     It was believed that thanks to the experiences gained from the course, the participants might broaden their own knowledge of environmental radiation monitoring and make a practical contribution to the further development of a nation-wide monitoring network.
