From 18 to 22 September 2017, in the framework of the Cooperation Program for Nuclear Human Resource Development between Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (VINATOM) and Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), the 9th VINATOM-JAEA Joint Training Course on Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Preparedness (NREP-9) was held at Hanoi-NuTEC Center, Institute for Nuclear and Technology (INST).
Twenty-one participants whose personal responsibilities relate to radiation protection and nuclear and radiological emergency response from eleven organizations attended the course.
Fifteen informative lectures were delivered by Japanese dispatched experts and Vietnamese instructors throughout the week of the course. The delivery of the lectures was made using a combination of theoretical, practical and exercise sessions. The practical sessions were carried out on the basis of the utilization of available equipment supported by Japan partner.
The course, annually conducted at the INST as a part of follow-up training courses, provided participants with both basic and specialized knowledge as well as good experiences related to nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response, including:
- Interaction of radiation with matter;
- Biological effects of radiation;
- Radiation protection for emergency workers;
- Medical treatment in nuclear emergency;
- Internal exposure assessment and radiation dose calculation;
- Environmental monitoring in emergency cases.
The course also gave brief information about Fukushima accident and the exposure situation in the accident as well as regulatory documents concerning nuclear and radiological emergency in Vietnam.
The course concluded on 22 September. All trainees received certificates of participation in the course. On behalf of the host organization, Deputy Director of the INST, Assoc. Prof. Pham Duc Khue made closing remarks and expressed his appreciation for the efforts of all experts, instructors and participants during the course. He hoped that the trainees would be able to make use of efficient knowledge and skills gained through attending the course for the contribution to their work.
